Preludes
One by one, the fairies living in wildflowers
and the voices of trees that once I could
see and hear, faded away.

The doctor smiled as he announced to my mother, “You have a beautiful baby girl but she has no legs.” |

Home Alone
Sometimes after I got them to bed, I would sit, fetal, on the sagging couch, drinking jug wine and crying. |

Although I was grateful, I didn’t understand what attracted them to me.
